Darmstadt Claims 197lb Title At Binghamton Open; Dean Finishes Runner-Up

Finger Lakes Prep was back in action this past weekend at the Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open at Binghamton University. The group put in a strong performance, with Ben Darmstadt taking top honors and Max Dean finishing as runner-up.

Ben Darmstadt (197) won his first three matches in convincing fashion, picking up two major decisions and a technical fall en route to the semi-finals. Darmstadt faced off against future teammate Jake Anderson of Cornell in the semi-final bout, and came out on top via a close 6-4 decision. In his final match, Darmstadt competed against another future teammate in Cornell’s Ben Honis. Darmstadt won his final bout of the day with another decision victory 8-2 to claim the title in the 197lb bracket, and finish his day a perfect 5-0.

Max Dean (184) also had a successful tournament, ending his day as the runner-up in his weight division. Dean started his day with two decision victories, and one major decision victory, putting him in the semi-final round. In his semi-final bout Dean bested Drexel’s Stephen Loiseau with another decision by the score of 11-7. Dean dropped his final match of the day to Binghamton’s Steve Schneider 4-1, finishing the tournament in 2nd place and a 4-1 record on the day.

Steve Garza (149) and Foster Karmon (165), and Adam Santoro (157) were three more Frogs that put in a strong performance. Garza had four wins on the day and finished just one match away from placing top six in the tournament. Garza finished his day with a record of 4-2. Karmon had three wins on the day, finishing with a record of 3-2. Santoro picked up a pair of wins, finishing 2-2 on the day.

Jeremy Puente (125), Johnny Strammielo (133), Max Pickett (141), Nick Carr (165), and Jacob O'Brien (184) all picked up a win, and ended their tournament 1-2.

The frogs are back in action this Sunday (11/20) at the New York State Collegiate Championships, hosted by Cornell University. The tournament will feature all college teams in New York State, of all divisions.
